How we went about it

Weight is easy to measure but hard to see. A home page can look light and still load video, fonts and scripts the visitor never notices. So we counted everything that loaded when the page opened, not only what shows.

Our responsibility and theirs

Weight is also a matter of responsibility. Visitors pay for every megabyte with their time, their mobile data and electricity, and those with the worst connection pay the most. Whoever builds a heavy home page makes a choice for everyone who visits it. Our own home page sends 157 KB. That's no record, but it shows an agency site can look good without being heavy.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a home page weigh?

As little as the content needs. The median agency in our measurement sends 1.6 MB, and our own home page 157 KB.

What makes a home page heavy?

Images, video, fonts and scripts that load at once, instead of when the visitor needs them.
